Two new telecommunications towers are set to be constructed in a North Clare village.
The separate developments are expected to significantly improve broadband and phone coverage in Corofin and beyond.
The first application was submitted by Emerald Tower Ireland, which is based in Galway and has recently been acquired by US headquartered Phoenix Tower International.
The company has been given the green light to replace an existing 12-metre structure with an 18-metre mast at Kilvoydan in Corofin.
It claims most people in Corofin are only served by 2G or 3G service, both of which mobile providers are in the process of phasing out.
One objection was lodged against the development from local residents Ray and Brenda Byrne who claimed the structure is being built on lands adjoining their property and would dominate the skyline so prominently that it will have a direct affect on property value and be less appealing to future buyers.
They also claimed the mast would be “visually intrusive” on and would upset the natural landscape.
Additionally, the local authority has also given the go ahead for Vantage Towers LTD to construct a 30-metre telecommunications tower at Corofin GAA pitch.
The project received letters of support from both Vodafone and Three Ireland.
In granting permission, Clare County Council attached the condition to both developments that they must be removed at the developer’s cost if the infrastructure becomes obsolete in the future.
