Proposed upgrade and enhancement of facilities at Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) and Mountshannon Village have been given the green light.
An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted approval for the works at the East Clare tourism hotspot.
The planning authority has given approval for the construction of welfare pods, including a weather shelter, water closets and a staff rest room, principally made up of prefabricated timber components.
The existing jetty to also be upgraded.
The planning permission will also allow for a new carpark in Mountshannon village, alongside upgrades to Mountshannon Harbour carpark and landscaping enhancements, while a future proof visitor centre was also part of the planning approval.
The planning and design project was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht as part of the RRDF 2 funding measure.
It’s considered a key part of Clare County Council’s commitment to sustainable tourism and aligns with national, regional and local strategies, including the National Planning Framework, Project Ireland 2040, the Shannon Tourism Masterplan and the Clare Tourism Strategy 2030.
The local authority says this marks another step forward in its proposal to further enhance and develop the island and village as a premier cultural and tourism destination, showcasing the rich heritage and natural beauty of the area.
Having received planning permission, the development of this project is now subject to further funding.
