Greek PM announces referendum on bailout deal

The Greek Prime Minister has called a referendum on the new bailout deal being proposed by its international creditors.

Alexis Tsipras announced the referendum plan in a national TV address last night.

He said the deal on offer would place "an unbearable weight on the shoulders of the Greek people".

The Greek Parliament will hold an emergency meeting today to ratify the referendum plan.

Greece is asking its international creditors for a short extension of the current bailout programme to allow for a national vote next Sunday.

It comes as Eurozone finance ministers gather in Brussels again today, to discuss the ongoing crisis.
