Government’s Plan To Tackle Homelessness Having Little Effect In Clare

New figures suggest the government’s plan to tackle homelessness has led to little improvement in Clare.

The number of adults listed as homeless in the county has more doubled since the government launched ‘Rebuilding Ireland’ last year, while the number of homeless children in this region has more than trebled.

In July of last year, then Housing Minister Simon Coveney pubilshed Rebuilding Ireland, a 5.5 billion euro response to the crises in housing and homelessness.

At that point, 34 children were listed as homeless in the MidWest region.

In under a year, however, that number has nearly tripled to 112.

Figures for June, which were released on the Friday evening before the Bank Holiday Weekend, show 53 families homeless in the MidWest.

They also show 39 individual adults listed as homeless in Clare, a figure which has fallen by 4 from May but is still more than double the amount recorded last summer.

32 of the 317 homeless adults in the MidWest are staying in Temporary Emergency Accomodation, which has minimal or no support for them.

That’s the highest of any region outside of Dublin.
