The government is being urged to protect Shannon Airport in the event that it decides to sell its stake in Aer Lingus.

The former flag carrier has rejected a takeover bid from British Airways owner IAG, but there has been speculation that an increased offer could be made.
The government would have to give its backing to any deal, as it retains a 25 per cent stake in Aer Lingus, but if it goes ahead then the new owner would gain valuable landing slots at Heathrow.
This has prompted fears that access to Heathrow could be taken away from Shannon, and Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara says that can't be allowed to happen.
