It’s being argued the Government should fund a “recovery plan” for Clare communities that have hosted a high volume of refugees in recent years.
At the latest meeting of Clare County Council’s Tourism Strategic Policy Committee, Lisdoonvarna Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy has called for the “restoration and accommodation of tourism accommodation capacity” in the county.
There’s been a 60% reduction in the number of tourism beds in Clare contracted to the State since 2023, with just 11% here now assigned to Ukrainian refugees or International Protection Applicants.
Councillor Garrihy believes the Government owes it to communities that have given a warm welcome to new arrivals.
