Government urged to fast track retail code of practice

The Enterprise Minister’s being urged to ensure that new proposals governing the retail trade will ensure Clare food businesses get their fair share of supermarket shelf space.

The government has signalled it will introduce a statutory code of practice to govern the trading relationship between grocery retailers and their suppliers in an effort  to ban unfair practices and penalise breaches

Many Irish suppliers have complained in recent years of retailers making unreasonable requests for financial support to secure shelf space, and of changing the terms of their deals at short notice.

Clare County Councillor and local businessman Johnny Flynn believes the new code should include provisions that would put home-grown food industries on a level playing field with the huge supermarket chains
