The government has declined to follow Clare County Council’s example by banning fracking from taking place in the country.
However, assurances have been given that any application for fracking to take place on-shore will have to pass through a strict licensing process.

Earlier this month, the local authority voted to begin the process of amending the county development plan to explicitly prohibit the controversial practice of extracting gas from shale.
Junior Minister at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Fergus O’Dowd says the government does not plan to ban fracking, as it may be economically lucrative.
