The government has rejected a call to amend century-old legislation on the minimum depth of graves.

Rural Affairs Miniser Ann Phelan has been urged to look at the laws, parts of which date back to 1888 and include a requirement that graves be at least eight foot deep.
This requirement was deemed unworkable by local undertakers when included in provisional burial ground bye-laws issued by Clare County Council – those laws have yet to pass, but this requirement is being removed by the local authority.
However, it will still remain on in national legislation after Minister Phelan rejected a call to change it.
