The Government’s record on protecting Irish bogs comes under the EU spotlight today.

Campaign group Friends of the Irish Environment will argue before the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament that the EU’s Habitats Directive has been consistently and illegally flouted.
Turf cutting has been banned on 32 active raised bogs mainly in the Midlands ans the West of Ireland , but the Irish Turfcutters Association says Tullagher Lough and Bog near Doonbeg is also included, while further Clare bogs could see similar bans in future.
