Government moves to assure Clare communities over policing changes

 

The government has moved to re-assure residents in North and West Clare that any new rostering arrangements in An Garda Siochana will not impact negatively on policing there.

Speculation in the community of Miltown Malbay regarding a change in the rostering of Gardaí there has seen plans for it’s future discussed in both the Dáil and the Seanad.

It comes as the Justice Minister is seeking the closure of further garda stations around the country – a move which has been branded as a slash and burn approach to local policing.

Representatives in North and West Clare say residents are fearful that it’s three Gardaí could be transferred to Ennistymon under new policing plans, and that this development could lead to the eventual closure of the station.

The new roster is to be rolled out on a pilot basis at the end of this month.

Speaking on behalf of the Justice Minister, Minister Phil Hogan has told the Seanad there is a need for reform within the force.
