A Clare contractor believes the Government needs to get directly involved in the construction of affordable houses to drive prices down.
CSO figures published today show the volume of production in construction declined nationally by 4.5 per cent in Quarter 2 this year, when compared to the first quarter.
Ciaran Breen of Ciaran Breen Construction says confidence has been lost in the construction sector due to the rising cost of labour and materials.
He believes a number of measures could be taken to stimulate the sector, including the suspension of VAT for two years and the examination of building regulations to include a graded system.
But he insists that the Government should also be looking to the past and getting back into building accommodation itself.
