Roisin Shortall, chair for the Future of Healthcare Committee, has hailed today as a landmark for healthcare in this country.

Her group have published a new ten year plan, entitled Slaintecare, which includes phasing out private healthcare at public hospitals and the offer of free GP care to everyone.

This comes at a cost – a 2.8 billion euro investment is required over the next decade along with a further three billion euro transition fund.

Health Minister Simon Harris says there will be “substantive debate” on the plans.

Clare’s Independent TD Dr Michael Harty is another member of the Future of Healthcare Committee, who have published this report.

He believes the existing system is not fit for purpose – and that the changes must see a shift towards a primary and secondary care-focused service to alleviate pressure on hospitals.

Meanwhile, the head of the UL Hospital Group says they will now assess the plan and work towards implementing it.

Colette Cowan agrees that there needs to be a shift towards care in the community.
