Clare’s Fine Gael TD has defended the Government saying it’s fully aware of the struggles people are going through and want to respond.
Cabinet Ministers are currently preparing the summer economic statement, and the Taoiseach has ruled out any measures to curb spiralling prices before October’s budget.
The Government has been coming under mounting pressure this week to tackle the rising cost of living now, rather than later.
Opposition parties say people can’t wait until October, and have called for a mini-budget before the Dáil recess next month.
But while the Taoiseach hasn’t ruled out emergency measures, this isn’t currently on the cards.
One of Clare’s Independent TDs believes the Government has lost control of the economy by “throwing money away” over the past number of years.
Scariff-based Deputy Michael McNamara also says they’re failing to deliver a plan that will combat further fuel and food prices this winter.
Clare’s Fine Gael TD says however that the country is being faced with a dynamic situation, with inflation levels not seen since the 80’s.
Joe Carey says the Government will respond in a comprehensive way at budget time through a suite of measures including on childcare and housing, but in the meantime it has to be careful not to fuel inflation further.
He insists they’ll will intervene in the meantime though, if needed.
