Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that the government will act quickly to fill the vacancy at the helm of the Shannon Group board.

The position remains vacant after the discovery of tweets which been sent by the presumptive nominee, Aaron Forde.

He subsequently apologised.

Mr. Forde had been selected by the Public Appointments Service, who will now presumably again play a role in finding another candidate, but Political analysts have suggested the Government would be better off in taking a different approach.

Calls have been made today for the PAS to be sidelined in the case of Chairmanships of State Boards, and that instead candidates be effectively head-hunted.

Former Fianna Fáil TD and Minister, Tony Killeen says there are plenty of qualified people in this region who wouldn’t think to go for the position unless they were approached.

A former Mayor of Clare says it’s incredulous that a person with little experience in the areas of aviation or tourism was selected to the role in the first place.

Long time Shannon representative Patricia McCarthy feels, that given the crisis facing the aviation sector, the next Shannon Group Chair will need to have experience in the field.
