Government Considers Alternative To Telephone Allowance

A Clare Fine Gael TD says the government is considering introducing a scheme to allay fears raised by the budgetary decision to scrap the telephone allowance.

The axing of the 9-euro-50 monthly payment has been one of the most criticised Budget measures, with opponents saying it will hit older people hard, particularly those in rural areas.

Concerns have also been raised that the move may force some to disconnect security alarms which are linked with their landlines, and Deputy Joe Carey says the issue has been discussed at a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party>

He told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that Minister Michael Noonan may consider a solution to the issue.
