Clare government TDs have welcomed the confirmation that a grant system will be in place for residents forced to replace their septic tanks.
Inspections of tanks will begin next year, and while officials say most tanks will be compliant or have their problems easily fixed, pressure had been put on Environment Minister Phil Hogan to ensure home-owners would not face bills of thousands of euro.

He’s now announced that homes where tanks are registered by February and with an income of up to 50,000 euro a year will receive assistance of up to 4,000 euro in the event that tanks need to be replaced. Households with an income of up to 75000 euro will receive up to 2,500 euro.
