A Clare disability campaigner is urging local councillors and oireachtas members to put pressure on the Government to allocate an additional 3 million euro in funding towards housing adaptation grants.
It comes as figures from Clare County Council show 292 grants have been approved this year through three schemes; the housing adaptation grant for people with a disability, housing aid for older people and the mobility aids grant.
But based on current predictions, 481 applicants will remain on the waiting list at the end of this year, which means that just over 3.1 million euro will be required to clear the backlog.
Disability Campaigner Dermot Hayes, who's a member of the council's planning and housing committee, says it's a small price to pay to keep people out of nursing homes and other institutions.
