The Government has been accused of tying Clare councillors’ hands behind their backs.
Shannon Municipal District councillors have expressed their disappointment following the revelation that the area’s roads maintenance budget has been slashed by 7% this year.
Of the €27 million countywide budget, over €3 million is from the local authority’s own resources, and Clare County Council Senior Engineer Cyril Feeney has claimed this should be closer to €6 million due to construction inflation.
Cathaoirleach of Shannon Municipal District, Cratloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat O’Gorman, believes councillors should have a greater role in deciding budgets for their areas.
