Gort man Sentencing Postponed until July

 

A Gort man involved in a 21 hour siege with Gardaí will be sentenced next July.

42 year old Anthony Burke was cleared having two shotguns and ammunition with intent to endanger life on the 8th and 9th of October 2006 but guilty of being in possession of the shotguns in suspicious circumstances.

A Gort man involved in a 21 hour siege with Gardaí will be sentenced next July.

42 year old Anthony Burke was cleared having two shotguns and ammunition with intent to endanger life on the 8th and 9th of October 2006 but guilty of being in possession of the shotguns in suspicious circumstances.

During the 8 day trial, the jury heard evidence from Anthony Burke and Gardaí that attended the siege at Crowe Street, Gort on the 8th of October 2006.

The 21 hour siege, during which 42 year old Burke fired 43 cartridges, ended when Mr Burke was shot by a Garda marksman.

Mr Burke had pleaded guilty to seven other charges at the start of his trial at the Galway Circuit Criminal Court but denied having two shotguns and ammunition with intent to endanger life

The jury took one hour and 20 minutes to clear Mr Burke of possessing the shotguns with intent to endanger life but guilty of being in possession in suspicious circumstances.

Judge Raymond Groarke deferred sentencing until July 27th and directed the preparation of a probation report.
