Gold, Silver and Bronze coming back to Ireland

As London 2012 comes to a close tonight – Team Ireland is celebrating its most successful Olympic campaign for almost 60 years.

The Irish athlete’s are bringing home a total of 5 medals – one Gold, one Silver and three Bronze.

Ireland’s only Gold medal was won by Bray boxer Katie Taylor and last night John Joe Nevin secured a silver – just missing out on the gold when he was defeated  by 14 points to 11 in his bantamweight final by Britain’s Luke Campbell.

Boxers Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon won bronze medals, along with showjumper Cian O’Connor.

President Michael D Higgins, the Taoiseach and Tánaiste  have all offered their congratulations to John Joe Nevin.

Meanwhile,

Organisers of London 2012 say tonight’s closing ceremony will be the best after-show party of all-time.

However, it’s expected to be "more relaxed" then Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony.

Three-thousand performers will be in the Olympic Stadium, including the Spice Girls and George Michael.
