The Global Karate Championships are being held at the University of Limerick over ten days in August, with up to 1,500 competitors from across the world taking part.
Ireland's bid to hold next year's championships, which was backed by Fáílte Ireland, was successful, following a unanimous vote by the Japan Karate Association.
Head Instructor for JKA Ireland, Sensei Noel Casey has been involved in marial arts for over four decades and he says it's a significant event for the region.
