Germany against EU Treaty Review for New French President

Germany is ruling out renegotiating the EU fiscal treaty – despite calls to do so by the new French president-elect Francois Hollande.

The Socialist Leader’s victory in the French elections could have a major impact on the eurozone crisis as Monsiuer Hollande has pledged to renegotiate the EU Treaty on government debt and seek growth elements to be added to the agreement.

However a spokesperson for the German government has said  re-working the pact that Ireland will vote on later this month is ‘not possible’.

Meanwhile back home, party leaders on both sides of the political divide have welcomed the election of Francois Hollande as President of France.

The Taoiseach has congratulated him on his victory – and says he looks forward to working with him to overcome Europe’s challenges.

Enda Kenny also welcomed his focus on jobs and growth in the EU.

Elsewhere, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore – who is currently in Paris where he yesterday travelled to lend his support to Hollande – has also offered his congratulations to the new French President.

While Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin says Francois Hollande’s win is a very welcome boost for all who believe that the EU must take a more active role in supporting a return to growth and job creation.
