Gardaí Warn Those Behind Shannon Anti-Social Behaviour Will Be Held To Account

Gardaí say anti-social behaviour at a Shannon apartment complex has escalated to a level that’s simply not acceptable.

It follows a meeting with residents in the Bru na Sionna apartment complex this week, during which concerns over persistent issues were raised.

Gardaí the youths involved could find themselves before the courts.

Broken windows, verbal abuse, stones being thrown at property, cars set on fire and urinating in elevator entrances; just some of the complaints by residents in the Bru na Sionna apartment complex.

They say young people have been involved in persistent anti-social behaviour since the town park re-opened after Covid-19 lockdowns.

They’ve highlighted their concerns in a meeting with An Garda Síochána this week, during which they’ve agreed to set up a local Neighbourhood Watch Committee that will report issues to local Gardaí.

Gardaí say steps will be taken to track those responsible down and hold them to account, as the level of criminal and antisocial behaviour is “too much for any area to cope with”.

Parents will be informed in the first instance, with the young people involved included in the Youth Diversion Programme. Anyone who fails to engage with that programme will be escalated to the courts.

Sergeant Seamus Mulligan of Shannon Garda Station says other measures will also be taken, such as calling to schools, liaising with agencies such as the Council and the Property Management Company and creating links with neighbourhood watch committees in other areas of the town.

Sergeant Mulligan is confident they’ll be able to bring the issue to a conclusion but he says it will take time.
