Garda Tony Golden was responding to a domestic disturbance at a house in Omeath at about half past six yesterday evening when he – and a woman who lived at the home – were shot by a man who later took his own life.

Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan has described the incident as a terrible tragedy.

Garda Tony Golden was responding to a domestic disturbance in Mullach Alainn when he and a woman in her 20s who lived at the house
were shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene – while the woman was taken to hospital – where she remains in a serious condition this morning.

24-year-old Adrian Crevan Mackin – originally from Co Down – also died from a gunshot wound – which gardaí believe to be self-inflicted.

Mackin was on bail – having been charged with membership of a dissident republican group in January.

The shooting comes less than three years after another Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was murdered in nearby Bellurgan.

Garda Chaplain Fr Joe Kennedy says the force will rally around Tony Golden’s family at this tragic time.
