Gardaí Suspect Machine Gun Seized In Drugs Haul Was Used In Shootings

Gardaí believe a sub-machine gun seized as part of a major drugs haul was the one used in two incidents where shots were fired at homes in Clarecastle.

Over €180,000 euro worth of drugs were seized along with the deadly weapon in related searches this weekend, as Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports.

On Friday, Gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drug Unit searched a house and lands in Kilmurray near Sixmilebridge, and later stopped a car on the Tulla Road in Ennis.

These searches led to the discovery of €160,000 worth of cocaine and cannibis herb along with a sub-machine gun and ammunition.

It was followed by a €21,000 seizure yesterday in a linked search in Miltown Malbay.

In each case, a man in his 20s was arrested and later released, with files being sent to the DPP.

Now, it’s emerged that the weapon found on Saturday has been linked with two incidents in Clarecastle, in which shots were fired at homes.

The most recent of those saw shots fired at the home of an innocent family just two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, one local representative says members of the public are concerned about the prevelence of drugs

Sixmilebridge Independent Councillor PJ Ryan, who’s a member of the county’s Joint Policing Committee, expects the issue to dominate its next meeting.
