A call for further security measures against sex offenders is just one of around 30 motions which will be debated at the 34th annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.
The event – which gets underway in Gorey in Wexford this evening – will also be looking at the Croke Park Agreement, fleet standards, Garda stations, armed Gardaí and morale.
The issue of sex offenders is also high on the agenda – with delegates from the Roscommon / Longford branch calling on the Justice Minister, to amend the Sex Offenders Act – so that convicted offenders will be required to supply additional personal information, including photographs to Gardaí
The Justice Minister Alan Shatter will address the conference today – the first since December’s budget cutbacks, the announcement of station closures and the departure of officers under the public sector retirement scheme.
The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan will address the middle ranking Gardaí tomorrow evening
