The Garda Ombudsman is investigating an incident in Newport in which a man died, moments after firing shots at members of the gardaí .
It happened during a routine gardaí patrol outside the Tipperary village shortly after 7.30 last night.
Officers signalled for the man to stop his vehicle but as they approached, he produced a shotgun and during a subsequent struggle with the gardaí , several shots were fired.
However gardaí then managed to wrestle the gun from the driver – but he then produced a second gun and turned it on himself.
The man, originally from Limerick but understood to be living locally, was pronounced dead at the scene and the shooting was referred to the Office of the Garda Ombudsman
