A Garda investigation is underway following the discovery of a car in a lake in county Clare.
A major search and rescue operation got underway at Lake Inchiquin, near Corofin yesterday evening, following the discovery shortly before 6 o’clock.
The alarm was raised at around quarter to six yesterday evening and Gardaí, together with units from the Ennis and Ennistymon Fire Services, Ambulance and the Doolin Unit of the Irish Coast Guard were dispatched to the scene.
Gardaí used a fishing boat to reach the vehicle, which was submerged 30 metres from the shore and broke windows to ensure no-one was inside.
Coast guard responders were subsequently stood down and fire crews hauled the car onto the slipway where a preliminary examination was carried out in an effort to identify the vehicle and its owner.
The car has since been removed for further technical tests.
Gardaí from Corofin are investigating the incident.
