On a giraffe tied to the railings outside the complex, someone has left a note that simply asks – why?

As the news spread of the tragedy last night – local councillor Ray McHugh says a deep sense of shock and loss spread with it.

Gardaí were called here around 7pm and the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in her 40s, believed to be the kid’s mother, is also in a serious condition in hospital.

It’s believed they were Iranian and had been living in the area for some time.

Gardaí are still on site to carry out a technical examination of the scene and an incident room has been established at Crumlin Garda Station.
