Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following last night’s fatal knife attack in Ennis in which one man was killed.
A second man suffered leg injuries following the same incident at a housing estate in Clare’s County town.
Speaking to Clare FM this morning eyewitnesses at the scene say a party was taking place at one of the apartments at the Sandfied mews Complex adjacent to the Ennis Leisure Centre.
At around 1o’clock – a row broke out at the party and a man was seen running from the premises to nearby apartment urging the resident to raise the alarm as a person had been stabbed.
The emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and the injured man – a 31 year old Polish national was brought by ambulance to Shannon Airport with the intention of flying him Cork University Hospital for emergency surgery – but he died on route.
A second man found close to the scene a short time later – had also sustained injuries – Eyewitnesses say the 39 year old suffered injuries to his leg after he jumped from a window at the the upstairs apartment where the party had been taking place –
He’s currently being treated at Limerick University Hospital .
The scene of the knife attack remains sealed off while a forensic examination takes place at the apartment and at another building. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis is also due to carry out a post-mortem this afternoon which is expected to determine the course of the garda investigation
Three people – including two Irish men have been arrested and are still being detained at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.
The 31 year old victim wasn’t a resident of the apartment in Sandfield Mews but Gardaí say he would have been a frequent visitor to the premises and had lived in Clare for a number of years.
They are now liaising with the Polish Authorities and Interpol in an effort to contact relatives of the dead man.
