Funeral Of Tragic Coast Guard Volunteer Takes Place Today

The funeral will take place this morning of Irish Coast Guard volunteer Caitriona Lucas who died when tragedy struck during a search and recovery operation in Kilkee on Monday. 

President Michael D Higgins has written to the family to express his condolences and will be represented at the funeral by his Aides De Camp, Lieutenant Commander Patricia Butler.

Large crowds are expected to descend on Liscannor this morning for the funeral of Catríona Lucas.

The 41-year-old mother of two, who was a member of Doolin Coast Guard, lost her life during a search operation for a missing man in Kilkee on Monday afternoon.

The mother of two, who lived in Liscannor, worked as a librarian at Ennistymon Library, where one of two books of condolance is open to the public.

Caitríona is survived by her husband Bernard and their children Ben and Emma. 

She'll be laid to rest in Kilmacreehy Cemetery following Funeral Mass at Liscannor Church at 11 o'clock.

The Irish Coast Guard Operations Manager has been speaking of the devastation amongst those who worked with Caitríona.

Gerard O'Flynn says she was an amazing colleague.

Meanwhile, a number of traffic restrictions will be in place for the duration of the funeral with local traffic being diverted between 12 noon and 1 o'clock.

Gardaí are asking members of the public to respect the restrictions and say there will be ample parking across from the Church for those wishing to attend.

Diversions will be in place for buses and HGVs travelling in the Ennistymon, Lisdoonvarna and Liscannor areas.
