Hundreds of mourners who gathered to pay tribute to the families bereaved by the fire heard that members of the Travelling community will travel to Rome, to meet with Pope Francis.

Thomas and Sylvia, and three of their children Jim, Christy and baby Mary were remembered in the Church of the Ascension of the Lord this afternoon, where Fr Derek Farrell described them as a lovely family who were loved.

In his role as parish priest of the Travelling people, father Farrell described the Carrickmines fire as unleashing a tsunami of grief.
Thanking the wider community for its support, he said it’s time for a change in attitude to Travellers.

And after the mass, John Lynch, who lost 3 of his siblings in the fire, paid this tribute.

The funeral cortege will now make its way to Wexford, stopping at the site of the fire on the Glenamuck road, and the family will be laid to rest tomorrow.
