Funding Vital For Conservation Of Clare’s Growing Bat Population

A charity aiming to preserve Clare’s bat population is hopeful that there will soon be an acceptance that money needs to be spent on protecting wildlife, woodlands and river systems.

The first species action plan for the lesser horseshoe bat has been published, which provides targets for conservation efforts by all stakeholders including Government, local authorities and NGO’s.

The first published record of the lesser horseshoe bat in Ireland was recorded from caves in Clare in 1859 and Clare now has one of the largest populations of the species in the country.

Kate McAney from the Vincent Wildlife Trust says Clare is very important for the species, because of the many underground sites in the Burren and that funding will be an important part of conservation efforts.
