Four and a half million euro has been announced by the Transport Minister for 26 greenway projects across the country.

Among them the West Clare Railway Greenway project, which, it’s envisioned, will follow the 85-kilometre route of the old West Clare rail-line, where possible, connecting Ennis to Kilrush or Kilkee.

The project is expected to cost over 20 million euro but studies show there’s a significant return from investment in projects like this.

Senior Engineer with Clare County Council, Sean Lenihan says the project is progressing well.

A further 140,000 has been earmarked for the design of another greenway linking Limerick with East Clare.

The route will connect the existing greenway at the University of Limerick with the old Errina canal and onwards to Clonalra, Killaloe and Scariff.

Scarriff Independent TD Michael McNamara says both projects will have wide-ranging benefits for the entire county.

Clare’s Green Party Senator has described the funding announcement as a crucial first step towards bringing these projects to fruition.

Róisín Garvey hopes they will form part of a much larger greenway route through Clare.
