The call comes from the HSE, which is highlighting the crucial role the service plays in rural communities. 

There are renewed calls for Shannondoc to reconsider a decision which will see cutbacks at their offices in Kilrush, Ennistymon and Killaloe.

The co-operative is blaming a lack of doctors, however HSE figures show there are only two fewer GPs in Clare than there were six years ago. 

And while there is a recognition of a difficulty in recruiting GPs in some areas, HSE Mid West Chief Officer Bernard Gloster hopes a solution can be found. 

A Killaloe Councillor is backing the HSE's call for a review. 

Fianna Fail's Tony O'Brien says its particularly important that people in all areas of the county have access to a doctor when needed.
