French Warplanes Carry Out Fresh Raids On Islamic State

French warplanes have carried out fresh raids on Islamic State overnight.

It's the second night running that its jets have targeted the group's stronghold of Raqqa in northern Syria.

President Francois Hollande is meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Paris this morning.

In a statement, the military says an Islamic State command centre and training base have been destroyed following further overnight airstrikes in Raqqa in Syria.

President Hollande is meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry this morning, after he flew to Paris in a show of solidarity.

They’ll discuss a joint response to the growing threat of IS – ahead of a meeting between Presidents Hollande, Obama and Putin.

Meanwhile the Global Terrorism Index says more than 32-and-a-half thousand people were killed last year – up 80 per cent on 2013.

The Institute of Economics and Peace, which produced the research, says Friday's terror in Paris shows Islamic State can now launch "sophisticated and deadly attacks" in Europe.
