The UL Hospitals Group has warned that four cases of the winter vomiting bug have been confirmed at the region's main hospital.

Strict visiting restrictions have been put in place at University Hospital Limerick, with only loved ones of critically unwell patients and parents of young children allowed to visit the facility.

The UL Hosptials Group says four cases of the winter vomiting bug have been confirmed at the region's main hospital today, while a further five patients are showing symptoms of the infection.

A number of staff are also on sick leave reporting gastrointestinal symptoms.

As part of efforts to contain the virus, a number of beds have been closed to admissions, which is expected to impact on capacity at the hospital over the coming days.

Already today, there has been a rise in the number of patients waiting for beds at the Dooradoyle facility, leading to it becoming the most overcrowded in the country once again.

Figures from the INMO show 41 people were waiting for beds this morning, 18 of those in the emergency department.

In a statement to Clare FM, the hospital says all infection control measures are in place and every effort is being made to manage and contain the spread of the virus.

People with symptoms including abdominal pain and nausea are advised to contact their GP by phone in the first instance and avoid presenting at the Emergency Department.

Statement from UL Hospitals Group:

Strict visiting restrictions have been put in place at University Hospital Limerick following an outbreak of the norovirus (winter vomiting bug).

As norovirus is also currently present in the community and can be carried in to the hospital by patients or visitors, it is necessary with immediate effect to restrict visiting at UHL to critically unwell patients. Parents visiting children are unaffected by the restrictions but are advised not to bring siblings.

We regret any inconvenience caused to patients and relatives by these necessary measures, which are being taken in the interests of patient care.

As of 12 noon on Thursday (December 8th) four cases have been confirmed and another five patients are symptomatic. In addition, a number of staff are on sick leave after reporting gastrointestinal symptoms.

All infection control measures are in place and every effort is being made to manage and contain the spread of the virus. Patients are being isolated and cohorted as appropriate and a number of beds have been closed to admissions in accordance with IP&C protocols. This is expected impact on  bed capacity over the coming days as the situation is managed.

People with symptoms including abdominal pain and nausea; followed by diarrhoea and/or vomiting are advised to contact their GP by phone in the first instance and avoid presenting at the Emergency Department at UHL.
