The former Taoiseach's been invited by his local branch to come back into the fold.
Party HQ says Mr Ahern would have to apply for membership – similar to any other citizen, but Micheál Martin says he doesn't expect this to happen.
Meanwhile, a former parliamentary party colleague of Bertie Ahern says he would have no issue if the ex-Taoiseach returned to the party.
The comments from former Defence Minister and Clare TD, Tony Killeen, come even though he says they never had a close relationship.
