A former Clare Labour TD believes Government plans which could result in jail sentences for car owners will “strike fear into hearts of people living in rural Ireland”.

The Cabinet agreed on an amendment to the Road Traffic Bill yesterday, which is due to be considered later this month.

If passed, car owners could face a jail sentence, a fine of up to 2-thousand euro and have their vehicle seized if a learner driver is caught driving unaccompanied. Currently only the learner faces prosecution.
