A former Clare Gaelscoil Principal has described the record number of Irish language exemptions in schools as something that would only happen in this country.
It follows reports that over 50 secondary schools received letters from the Department of Education last year, reminding them not to grant Irish exemptions based on psychologists’ reports.
More than 20 thousand students were exempt from studying the language last year and the Department now says students must have persistent literacy difficulties across all subjects to justify an exemption.
Irish language enthusiast and presenter of Clare FM’s Cúl Chaint Donal Ó’Lionsigh says the lack of action since is inexcusable.
