Former AIB Chief Explains Reasons For Apologising To Banking Inquiry

The former chief executive of AIB says the reason he's apologised at the banking inquiry today is because he could have stopped the bank's reliance on one toxic part of lending in the Irish economy.

Eugene Sheehy – who was in charge of the bank between 2005 and 2009 – told the inquiry he was sorry and knew that a lot of people were let down.

He says what happened the bank under his tenure as the group chief executive is a matter of eternal regret and sorrow.

And under questioning from Senator Susan O'Keefe, he admitted he could have stopped the bank becoming so reliant on construction and development.
