Flow of water through Parteen Weir to be reduced

The flow of water from Parteen Weir is being reduced to 405 cubic metres per second today.

It's the second consecutive drop since Saturday due to a reduction in water levels in Lough Derg.

But the ESB is warning that this level of discharge will continue to lead to flooding on land and property in the vacinity of the Lower Shannon, including the Springfield area of Clonlara.

The power company says it's continuing to liaise with Clare County Council and will review the situation again tomorrow.

Meanwhile, there are calls for clarification from the EU on whether or not dredging of rivers is allowed as a flood prevention method. 

A cross party delegation is set to raise recent flooding at the European Environment Commission in Brussels this week. 

It's after hundreds of people were forced out of their homes due to flooding in recent weeks.

Ireland South MEP, Sinn Féin's Liadh Ni Riada says that there can't be the same inaction that there was following the 2009 flooding.
