Flight Diverts To Shannon With Ill Passenger

A transatlantic jet diverted to Shannon Airport early on Tuesday morning.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight KL-714 was travelling from Paramaribo in Suriname to Amsterdam in The Netherlands at the time.

Shortly before 3.00am, when the flight was about 300 kilometres south of Ireland, the crew made contact with air traffic controllers to request clearance to divert to Shannon.

The flight crew reported they had a female passenger on board who was showing symptoms of a stroke and requested that emergency medical services be available for their arrival.

The flight landed safely at 3.40am and was met on arrival by Shannon Airport Police and Fire Service vehicles. The aircraft taxied to the terminal building where  airport authorities and National Ambulance Service paramedics were standing by.

The passenger was removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The flight continued its journey to Amsterdam at around 5.20am.
