The grading and CAO points system in the Leaving Certificate is getting ready for its first overhaul in more than 20 years.

The new CAO system means that instead of the current ABC grading, students will be marked from 1 to 8 at higher and ordinary level.
From 2017, the number of grades awarded to students will also be reduced from 14 to 8.
Another expected change is that students who get between 30 and 39 per cent in an honours paper will still be awarded points.
