Fine Gael Tds to meet councillors over proposed abolition

Clare’s Fine Gael Oireachtas members face tough questions from local representatives later today over the government’s plans to abolish the county’s four town councils.

Deputies Pat Breen, Joe Carey along with Senators Tony Mulcahy and Martin Conway have been asked to meet with the party’s 14 urban authority councillors in Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush and Kilkee at an internal meeting in Ennis.

Local representatives are already formulating a plan of opposition to the Environment Minister plans with Kilrush Town Council calling for a joint strategy from all four authorities, while Ennis representative believe it should involve a protest to the Dáil or even Aras an Uachtaráin.

Tonight’s meeting will take place in the Auburn Lodge Hotel and councillors are expected to demand that their Oireachtas party colleagues back a campaign of resistance to the changes.
