The Co-ordinator of the Clare Immigrant Support Network believes the cost of applying to the regularisation scheme could be preventing some undocumented migrants from seeking legal status.

The scheme was opened in January and allows undocumented persons to obtain Irish residence and access labour markets.

Of the estimated almost 20,000 illegal migrants living here, only over 5,000 people had applied as of April.

Orla Ní Éilí, co-ordinator of Clare’s Immigrant Support Network, says three of the applications they’ve helped with have sought help from hardship funds to cover the costs.
