Finance Minister criticised over emigration comments

Fianna Fáil is calling on the Finance Minister to immediately apologise for remarks he made yesterday, which seemed to dismiss emigration as an opportunity to travel, rather than an economic necessity.

Michael Noonan described his own family’s experiences – explaining that three of his children live abroad, and that none of them could properly be described as emigrants.

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on enterprise and trade, Willie O’Dea, says the remarks will be viewed as insulting by the families of the 40-thousand Irish people who emigrated in the twelve months to last April.

The Former Minister has described the comments as astonishing, and he’s added that the government should be focusing on creating jobs at home:
