She says assiting the airport in its recovery from the pandemic is among her main aims.

Minister Hildegarde Naughton is visiting Shannon Airport today to examine facilities including baggage screening facilities at the Midwest airport, which recently saw a Government investment of six million euro.

The Minister of State and the Department of Transport is also meeting Shannon Group CEO Mary Considine to discuss future plans for the airport and how the Government can assist it to emerge from the pandemic.

Shannon Airport has been granted 20 million euro in aviation sector supports in 2021 and Minister Naughton says there will continue to be a focus on providing infrastructural supports, to ensure further growth in passenger numbers.

She says Shannon has done well in extremely difficult circumstances.

The Junior Minister has also given assurances that the appointment of the Chair of Shannon Group is a priority.

The position has been vacant since Rose Hynes departed the role a year ago, after Transport Minister Eamon Ryan revoked the appointment of Aaron Forde last February, over the Sligo businessman’s use of social media.

Minister Naughton insists the appointments process is making progress.

Minister Naughton is also due to visit the Irish Aviation Authority’s Offices in Ballycasey for the launch of its sustainability report.
