Fianna Fáil Threatens Government Over Water Charges

Fianna Fáil says the Government will collapse if it refuses to implement the findings of the Oireachtas committee on water charges.

But Enda Kenny is insisting the Government cannot introduce legislation which it believes would break EU law.

Meanwhile, the manager of the Kilmaley Group Water Scheme, has hit out over recommendations to scrap the charges.

It’s been one of the most talked about topics in recent times and now water charges are making waves between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil once again.

A deal between the two parties included setting up an Oireachtas Committee to decide the future of water charges – with the Housing Minister Simon Coveney to introduce whatever laws that new system would require.

Now, the majority of the ‘Future of Water Services’ committee have signaled they want the removal of all domestic charges – including a charge for excessive use.

But that may be in breach of EU directives and Minister Simon Coveney is refusing to bring in laws on a new system if they don’t include charges for wasting water.

Minister Coveney’s told the housing committee today that he hopes a resolution can be found.
